Jeff Payne - Our fittest athlete
We’ve heard that our good friend and colleague Jeff Payne recently had a most unfortunate fall and fractured his femur resulting in hospitalisation and an operation. We’ve spoken with Jeff who is now recovering at home and is incapacitated but reports that he is slowly recovering one day at a time.
Jeff has to be in a class of his own as the fittest athlete in the history of the Bermuda Police . An outstanding middle distance runner, Jeff competed in men’s 1500 metre races at the Pan Am Games in 1963 in Brazil, and in the Mexico Summer Olympics in 1968. On the local scene he made history in 1997 when he pulled of the astonishing feat of winning the annual Heritage Day May 24th Cycle Race at the ripe old age of 58, making him the only athlete in Bermuda’s history to have also won the annual May 24th Marathon Derby which he did in 1980. And just to prove he’s a glutton for punishment, Jeff also stepped into the Boxing ring to compete in our first ever Evening of Boxing held in the PRC in March 1969.
We wish Jeff all the best for a speedy recovery.
