Young P.C. Andy Heggie

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Sergeant Andy Heggie who served in the Bermuda Police from April 1960 -  December 1965, before emigrating to Australia with his wife Patricia (nee Watts) who he met and married while here in Bermuda.

Andy had served in the British Army prior to coming out to Bermuda, and whilst here he was an active sportsman and a regular member of the Police Rugby Team.

Andy first worked on the beat in Hamilton before being transferred to Cycle Squad in 1963  where he was promoted to Sergeant in 1965.  He was also a drill instructor at the Police Training School for several Basic Training Courses.

After serving here for 5 years, Andy and his wife emigrated to Australia and settled in South Australia near Brisbane, where they were the best of friends with  Dave and Margaret Gillery.  Dave had also served here in the Bermuda Police from  1959 to 1985  before  he and his Bermuda born wife, Margaret,  went to live in Florida for 5 years before moving to Australia.  CLICK HERE to read Dave Gillery's reminiscences in our "Then and Now" column.

It was Dave who passed on the sad news about Andy who had been in failing health in an aged care facility for the past 6 months.

We offer our sincere condolences to Andy's wife Pat and their family and also to Dave and Margaret Gillery.
