PASSING OF DUDLEY SWAN -  We are deeply saddened to  report that our old friend and colleague, retired Inspector Dudley Swan passed away peacefully earlier this morning (24th December 2022) at Agape House at the age of 93.

Dudley was born and raised in St. George’s, the son of Fielding and Mayalene Swan, and he joined the Bermuda Police in July 1951 as a young constable at which time he was stationed in familiar territory – in Eastern Division, St. George’s where he spent much of his police career.  After a spell on the beat, he became a parish constable but was then transferred to Eastern CID where he was promoted to Sergeant in 1967 and appointed OIC Eastern CID.

After promotion to Inspector he continued to serve in CID and also had spells in Murder Room and in Central and Eastern Uniform.

Awarded the Colonial Police Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct in 1969,  and his 30 year clasp in 1976.  Dudley retired after 30 years service in the BPS and he was, without doubt, one of our most popular and much liked officers with all those he worked with.  CLICK HERE to read more about Dudley’s police career in our “Then and Now” column.

Dudley married the love of his life, Marlene Wingood in 1954, and became a member of a family with three serving police officers. Marlene’s brother is Hilton “Jellybean” Wingood, and her sister Lillian is married to Gladwin “Doc: Hall.  Dudley and Marlene, “Doc, and Lillian, and Hilton and his wife Brenda, have been regular attendees at our ExPo functions for many years.

We offer our sincere condolences to Marlene,  their two children, Perry and Dudley, eight grandchildren - Katrina, Melissa, Princess, Alex, Jordan, Desiree, Destine and Zeal,  and four great grandchildren Kalwin, Kelsey, Robert and Jasmine., and numerous other relatives and many friends.

We will publish funeral details as soon as they are announced.

Comment received from former P.C. Brian Hanney:-

"I was very sad to hear that my old boss in ECID had passed away. Dudley was a great guy who always had a smile on his face and a kind word to his staff. I have photos of him at our wedding where he is clearly enjoying himself!
Our sincere condolences to his wife and family.
Regards Brian & Carol Hanney"
