This is the time of year when ExPo is asked by the BPS to provide them with a list of those former and retired colleagues who have died during the past 12 months. The reason for this request is that during the annual Memorial Service which starts off Police Week on Sunday 1st October, the Commissioner reads off a list of all those who have passed since last October.
* We understand that although Sgt Greg Grimes had retired from the Service he had been re-hired as a Constable for a short term contract at the time of his tragic passing.
Earlier in 2017 we also heard about the death of former P.C. Colin MacDonald who had died in 2014.
LIST OF DECEASED FORMER POLICE OFFICERS
In addition to the above list of our former members who died in the past 12 months, we also have quite an extensive list of over 350 deceased former Bermuda Police Officers which you can find at http://expobermuda.com/index.php/deceased
Unfortunately, this list is not as extensive as it should be because for many years no-one kept any records of our colleagues who had died. It is next to impossible to include everyone as the case of Colin MacDonald clearly shows because we did not hear of his passing until some 2 years later.
If you have a few moments we invite you to check our list and please let us know if there is anyone missing that you are aware of. Even more important, please let us know if there is anyone on the list who is still with us!
LIST OF COLLEAGUES
We also keep an extensive list of our former colleagues for whom we have some contact details, whether it be their email address, home address, or phone number etc. This is a very useful resource if you are trying to contact a fellow colleague, or he or she is trying to contact you. We have received numerous such requests, and you may notice that our list does not include actual contact details. This is to avoid anyone receiving unwanted calls or emails. Our policy is that if someone wishes to contact you, we will pass their contact details on to you and you can then decide if you want to make contact with them. We have never had a problem with this system and have put people in touch with each other who were old friends from childhood. You can find our List of Colleagues at http://expobermuda.com/index.php/colleagues
Again, this is not a formal list and we are missing many of our former colleagues, especially those we have lost contact with. Please take the time to review this list and either let us know if there is anyone you are aware of who we have not included, or contact them and ask them to contact us at info@expobermuda.com
We now have a dedicated Police Memorial and several graves set aside in the Military Cemetery at Prospect, for the burial of serving officers and former officers who have died and who wished to be buried there. The list is as follows:-
Constable Michael Frederick Henry Hills
Constable William Fox Galloway
Inspector John Wallace Starbuck
Commissioner George Duckett, Esq, O.B.E. COP
Sergeant Reginald James Brown
Chief Inspector James McNiven
Inspector Douglas Noel Hebberd
Sergeant John Frederick Morris
* Denotes ashes were interred. These persons were cremated abroad and their ashes brought to Bermuda, but cremation will no doubt become more prevalent here because Bermuda now has our own crematorium.
INVITATION TO MEMORIAL SERVICE AND TO ANNUAL EXPO BBQ
This year (2017) the Bermuda Police Service is holding a very special Memorial Service at the Police Cemetery at 5pm on Sunday 1st October to which you are cordially invited as friends and relatives of our loved ones who served in the BPS. The service will be attended by His Excellency the Governor and the Commissioner of Police who will lay wreaths at the memorial. Family members are also invited to lay wreaths or flowers in honour of their departed loved ones. The Police Colours will be marched into the cemetery along with a full Honour Guard, and we will have a visiting Pipe Band from Canada performing during the ceremony.
Following the service, everyone is invited back to the Police Recreation Club at Prospect where the visiting Pipe Band along with our own Bermuda Pipe Band and the Somerset Brigade Band will be performing on the square in front of the old Police Headquarters building, and this will be followed by our annual ExPo BBQ hosted by the Commissioner of Police. Full details will be announced very soon and we urge you to attend and make this a very special event.
