We had a really nice surprise last week when we received an email from the granddaughter of former P.C. Andy Dryburgh who served here in the Bermuda Police from 1960 to 1966. Danielle wrote to say that Andy would be keen to get in contact with the people he knew while living here in Bermuda.
Andy was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, in 1939, and arrived here in May 1960 having served for 5 years in the Fife Police as a Cadet and Constable. Andy was first posted to Central Division at Hamilton Police Station then to Operations (Traffic) in October 1963. He and his wife Elizabeth were married here in October 1960 and their first daughter Audrey was born here on Island.
Danielle has written to say that Andy is now living in Cardenden, Fife, literally next door to Danielle which is very handy for two reasons One is because Andy isn’t great with technology, and the other is because last year Danielle - Audrey’s daughter - presented him with his first great-grandchild, Jude, who is keeping him on his toes as Jude learns to walk and get into all sorts of mischief!
In his retirement Andy has enjoyed travelling to visit his family and even, very generously gave granddaughter Danielle a lift all the way to France for her university year abroad.
Andy’s oldest daughter, Audrey, lives fairly nearby in Glenrothes. Two of his three other children, Carrie and Andrew, are married and living in Ireland, while Andy’s youngest son, Scott, is living in Wigan.
Sadly, Andy’s lovely wife Elizabeth (Betty) passed away in January 2007 but she leaves behind many fond memories in her four children and six grandchildren.
Andy is now in rather poor health and so his travelling days are at an end, however, he still very much enjoys visits from his far-flung family.
Danielle has kindly provided us with her email address to be used if any of her grandfather’s old friends and colleagues would like to contact him. We do have a policy of not publishing email addresses etc. on our website, but we would be more than happy to pass on any information directly to Danielle if you would like to get in touch with Andy. Just write to us at info@expobermuda.com
Danielle has also promised to assist her grandfather in putting together his life story for our Then and Now column. We look forward to receiving it.
