Passing of Maurice “Mickey” Caines

Mickey Caines

We were saddened to read about the recent passing of a legendary character, Maurice “Mickey” Caines in the 6th November edition of the Royal Gazette. (CLICK HERE for the Royal Gazette article).

Anyone who served in the Police here in Bermuda from the 1960’s through the 1990’s will have great memories of Mickey who worked for many years at Elbow Beach, and as maitre ‘d at the Empire Room at Southampton Princess.

How many young single policemen spent their off duty time down at Elbow Beach, especially during College Weeks,  and played volleyball  in games organized by Mickey?  I can recall one day having a guy who looked very familiar asking if he could join a group of us playing volleyball, and Mickey suggested that he wait for a few minutes until someone dropped out of the game.   Sure enough a few minutes later he joined the game and we recognized him as none other than the actor Tony Curtis.

Mickey was also a great football player who played for the national team and was a regular player for Hotels when they had one of the strongest teams in Bermuda.

For those of our readers from abroad, you may not be aware of it but a few years ago Elbow Beach opened a fabulous outdoor restaurant right on the beach in front of their hotel and it was named “Mickey’s” in honour of Mickey Caines.  If you ever return to the Island for a visit we recommend you wander down memory lane, enjoy a meal down at Mickey’s and raise your glass to our good friend Mickey Caines.
