Young P.C. Richard "Rex" Henley Saunders

We were saddened to hear that our former colleague, Richard "Rex" Henley Saunders, passed away in Australia on 24th November 2025.  We first heard the news from Brian Hanney who attended Basic Training Course #9 along with Rex (see photo below) and were able to confirm it through The Canberra Times.

Rex served here in the Bermuda Police from July 1967 to July 1969, and following training school he served in Central Division.  He met his future wife, Susan, here in Bermuda where she worked as a nurse at King Edward Memorial Hospital, and after resigning they travelled to Australia where, according to Brian,  they settled and Rex continued his police career serving in several Australian police forces.

We offer our sincere condolences to Rex's wife, Susan, their two children Mark and Kyle, along with their grandchildren and other family members and friends.

In writing to us with the sad news, Brian commented that it was a long time ago since he came to Bermuda and there are probably very few of his training school colleagues still with us.  There are several that we havn't heard from in many years, such as Peter Irwin and Ian Andrews, but Jimmy Costello is still here in Bermuda, and Ian Ganson is still with us although he settled in Canada as is Brian Hanney.
