Our "Who, Where and When" column has traditionally featured those who have either served in the Bermuda Police or on our civilian staff, but we're making an exception with this gentlemen who just might have a voice that may be familiar to almost every police officer who has served here since ...... when?

We wonder if you can remember who he is, what he's being doing for many, many years, and what can you remember about one of Bermuda's most unforgettable characters.

David Lopes
"Bright eyed, bushy tailed, skinny legs an' all!"

Our famous radio personality is, of course, our good frend David Lopes who started working as a "DJ" at ZBM studies way back in the early 1960's, and EARLY doesn't begin to tell how "early" he was every morning. He would be up and about before the crack of dawn to milk  his cows down at the farm next to Spittal Pond  and still be up  there at Prospect for a his daily show which, to the best of my memory started at 6am.

David was the "King of Country Music" here in Bermuda and was a pioneer playing country on ZBM.   He would also play both American and British pop music, and along with Everest DaCosta, another DJ at ZBM, they would play called in requests from Bermuda's British bobbies!  I recall calling in a request one time for the policeman on guard duty at Government House (me) for the Rolling Stones hit, "I can't get no Satisfaction!"

For many years David would have a "Thank a Policeman Day" on his Talk Show"

David was actively involved ever year in the Annual Agricultural Show and could often be seen then, and still to this day, riding his horse and buggy out on the roads on the odd occasion when the traffic is a little quieter.  He also still provides his legendary daily "Morning Baseball Report" on 'Inspire 105' which is now heard around the world through the internet.

I was recently surprised by a good friend of mine, John Ferguson, who also worked at ZBM as their News Director and now lives near Ottowa in Canada, when he told me  he often listens to David's morning show which is now streamed around the world with the latest technology via cell phones, on computers and devices such as Amazon's "Alexa" and Apple's "Siri".   Just say the magic words "Hey ...... play Inspire 105" between 6am and 9am Mondays to Fridays (Bermuda time)  and you can catch the dulcet tones of Bermuda's one and only David Lopes who sure has come a long way since the 1960's!

David is one person who epitomizes the Abraham Lincoln quote:-
“Don’t count the amount of years in your life; count the amount of life in your years”
