Young P.C. Julian Hassan Amali-Merrounie
on the beat outside the Supreme Court in Hamilton

In late February 2026, we published an article in our 'Keeping in Touch' column in which we mentioned our good friend, former P.C. Julian Hassan Alami-Merrouni who we understood is now living in Scotland. Jim McIlwain is planning a return visit to his homeland and when, and if he does, Jim wanted to meet up with Julian who he had last seen at Alistair “Shakey” Johnson’s funeral back in 2017. CLICK HERE to view our article about “Shakey”.

We were short of photos of Julian except for his 1990 Graduation from Training Course # 44  and we wrote and asked  him if he could bring us up-to-date on where he is and what he’s doing these days.

Julian replied as follows:-  “Life has sure changed since 'Shakey' passed away. I miss his company, bouncing ideas, news stories and always new adventures to be seen and discovered.

I’ve spent the last 9 years with a distillery in Invergordon ( Whyte and Mackay ) and have now left them for a travel closer to home. I can now be found at Raigmore hospital  which is 10 minutes away.

I spend the rest of my time with my wife of thirty years now Anna and my two boys, Matthew and James. Matthew is at university in Aberdeen and James is an apprentice Mechanic in Inverness. We have a grandson on Sundays, Wee Finn, which is lovely. We have another grandson in Motherwell, and two more with my other son Mark who lives in Canada.

I like to visit my yacht in Findhorn and also keep occupied in my garden.

I play keyboards in my wife’s Rock band, Red Rock Voices, every Thursday. We have been raising money for local charities since 2010 with about thirty to forty singers and a full band night at the end of term.”

Julian awarded "Fight of the Night" by H.E. The Governor, David Waddigton
together with Commissioner of Police Lennett "Lenny" Edwards

Julian still has fond memories of his time in the Bermuda Police. In fact he first joined the Reserve Constabulary in 1985 until 1990 when he joined the regular Police.  When asked about his postings, Julian recalls starting in Central Division for the first 6 years, and then served for 7 years in Eastern Division, starting off as an Eastern Division Field Intelligence Officer to Special Branch. Julian also worked on the Task Force (re-named the PSU) and on Crime Patrol.

One of his fondest memories was "raiding" the Esso City Centre gas station for coffee before his night patrols in Hamilton!

On a sports note Julian  mentions the unforgettable time when they were short of fighters for the Annual Evening of Boxing being held at the Southampton Princess in 1992 and he agreed to fill in with what appears to have been a highly successful evening according to the above photo.  We gather this was the one and only time Julian entered the boxing ring, but he really enjoyed playing tennis on the Police “B” team when his partner for a while was Stuart Innes.

It was great to hear from Julian who is enjoying his life and family in the Bonnie Highlands.
