P.C. Arthur Childs and his wife Winnie on their wedding day - August 1953

I wonder how many of our retired and former police officers will remember Sgt. Arthur Childs who served in the Bermuda Police from 1935 – 1950. Arthur left the Police in the same year that our most senior retired officer, Inspector Gladwin “Doc” Hall joined as a young police constable. After leaving the Police Force Arthur set up a Locksmith and Repair Shop first on Burnaby Street and then on Serpentine Road which he operated until his death in 1969.  One of our colleagues who well remembers Arthur and his wife Winnie is Terry Cabral who worked for Arthur as a young lad at his workshop on Serpentine Road before Terry joined the Police Cadets.

In 2017, George Rose took on the task of writing an article about Arthur Childs who was a truly outstanding boxer in the 1940’s and early 1940’s, and was also a first class marksman. George was astonished to discover that Arthur’s wife, Winnie Childs, was still alive and well, at 104 years of age, yes 104, and residing at Westmeath on Pitts Bay Road.

Mrs Winnie Childs at 104 years of age was interviewed by George Rose

Arthur Childs often made the headlines throughout his boxing career as you can see from the excellent and well-researched article George Rose produced for our ExPo website Hall of Fame at http://expobermuda.com/index.php/latesthof/614-test-of-arthur-richard-childs-article

Royal Gazette Headline 11th August 2018
"I feel good: Winnie going strong at 105"

Well, would you believe it Winnie just hit the headlines herself in the Royal Gazette upon celebrating her 105th birthday. She even gave an interview and admitted, “I never thought I would see 105, but now that I’m here I think I feel good for my age.” You can read the Royal Gazette article at http://www.royalgazette.com/news/article/20180811/i-feel-good-winnie-going-strong-at-105

We offer our congratulations to Winnie who we believe is not only our most senior Police widow, but is believed to be the oldest person in Bermuda.
