We are deeply saddened to receive news that our old friend and former colleague William “Bill” Smith died peacefully in his sleep on 8th July 2018 at his home in Burlington.
Jeff Baker kindly sent us this obituary notice below for Bill that was published in the Burlington Spectator.
Bill served here in the Bermuda Police from 1959-1966 and while here he met and fell in love with a young Danish girl, Ingrid who he married in 1962. He was promoted to Sergeant and in 1966 he and Ingrid decided to emigrate to Canada. Bill wrote an excellent article about his life story which is published in our “Then and Now” column at http://expobermuda.com/index.php/tan/54-wsmith
To the best of my knowledge Bill’s last visit to Bermuda was in 2010 at which time he met up with some of his old friends for lunch at the RHADC. These included Brian Jones, Ian Morrison and George Hammond. A very popular guy, Bill will be sorely missed by all who knew him, we send our sincere condolences to his wife Ingrid and to all of Bill’s family and friends.
Obituary for Bill in the Burlington Spectator
Peacefully in his sleep in Burlington on Sunday, July 8, 2018 after 79 adventure filled years. He will be missed by his wife of 56 years, Ingrid, his sons and daughters-in-law Henrik and Doris, and Hans Christian and Chantal, and grandchildren Siena and Conrad.
A world traveler, a Royal Air Force veteran, a member of the Bermuda Police Force, where Bill retired as a Sergeant, and a dedicated employee of Ford of Canada where he spent 31 years.
Bill believed in service and giving back: he was a cub scout leader, spent 25 years with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, retiring as a Lieutenant-Colonel, and was a leader in the Niagara Peninsula Crime Prevention Committee.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: washing his cars, a good steak and a comfortable chair. As Bill would always counsel, “carry on as if we know what we are doing”. We will miss you.
