Charles Maurice "Joe" Mercer
We recently learned of the tragic death of Charles Maurice “Joe” Mercer, aged 88, who served briefly in the Bermuda Police Force from 1949-1950. Joe, who was 88 years old, died when the vehicle the was driving left the road and plunged into Kent River, in Kendall, Cumbria, England.
Joe came out to Bermuda in 1949 after serving in the British Army and also in the Palestine Police. He arrived here on RMS Caronia along with a number of young men who had also served in Palestine, including Doug “Red” Hebberd.
While here in Bermuda he became good friends with P.C. Howard Mitchell and they stayed in touch with each other for many years.
We first made contact with Joe after he attend a function for former British South African Police officers in the UK where he met with Derek Singleton who had also served in the BSAP. (CLICK HERE for an article in our “Then and Now” column.)
A funeral service for Joe will be held at Carmel Priory in South Cumbria at 11.30am on Tuesday1st December. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
