Young P.C. Peter McNulty

Former P.C. Peter McNulty is presently visiting the Island and staying with his son Sean, who moved here 7 years ago.  Peter had hoped to meet up with some of his “old” mates at the regular Thursday afternoon gathering at the Police Club but the PRC and the Officers Mess are both still closed for renovation, so we arranged a little get-together at the Mariners Cub in Hamilton on Thursday afternoon (21st November)  which proved to be a fascinating trip down memory lane for Pete and those who came.

Thursday afternoon Get Together - Mariners Club
(l-r) John Skinner, Ernie McCreight, George Rose, Joe Tildesley,
Peter McNulty, Charlie Mooney and Sean McNulty

It was attended by John Skinner who came out to Bermuda on the same flight as Pete in July 1972, Ernie McCreight who played football on the same Police team as Pete for several years, and George Rose who was working in Narcotics when Peter was transferred to the department and they went on several drugs raids together. Also in attendance were Charlie Mooney, myself, and Joe Tildesley a visiting retired Inspector from the West Midlands Police. Joe is Secretary of the Birmingham Branch of the National Association of Retired Police Officers. I’ll be writing more about Joe in a separate article, but he thoroughly enjoyed the gathering and certainly gained some revealing insights about policing in Bermuda.

Peter’s son Sean came to Bermuda during Covid, in 2020, as a “digital nomad” a designation  created by Government to attract people to come and work here.  Sean clearly fell in love with the Island, and has since started a local exempt company. He and his wife Jana, had their first child born here, Campbell Patrick McNulty, who is presently being totally spoiled by his granddad!

After leaving Bermuda in 1978, Peter headed to Canada where he joined the Durham Regional Police.  After retiring from the Durham police  Peter put his CID skills to work and set up a very successful company, McNulty and Associates Investigations Limited.  He had met and married his lovely wife, Velma, and they have two sons, Sean and Andrew. Now retired, Peter and Velma have settled in Aurora, close to his best friend, Neil Morgan, who he met here in Bermuda while they were both working here in the 1970’s.

Peter and his old mate Neil visited the Island two years ago and turned up at Mad Hatters restaurant at the Mariner's Club just as we were finishing our annual pre-Christmas lunch.  He chatted briefly with a few of his former colleagues at the time and vowed to return again -   he's now kept his word!

It was clear from our get together on Thursday afternoon (21st November) that Bermuda is still up there as one of Peter’s favorite places in the world.  It was also clear that over the years he'd regaled his sons with tales of his adventures here, some of which may have been taken with a grain of salt by his sons, but any doubts about their veracity disappeared as soon as Sean heard first-hand from those present at the get together. We quickly confirmed Peter’s exploits in the boxing ring where he had one of the fastest ever knockouts in our Boxing Tournaments, and when George Rose pulled out his copious notes of drug raids which corroborated Peter’s accounts to the letter.

I should add that although he’s had some health issues over the years, Peter still possesses a remarkable memory about life in Bermuda almost 50 years ago.  A good time was had by all at our get together.
