Sergeant Michael Spurgeon Phillips
We were deeply saddened to hear the news that our good friend and colleague, retired Sergeant Michael Spurgeon Phillips, passed away yesterday afternoon (24th October 2024) while on a visit to Orlando, Florida.
Michael was an exceptionally well-liked colleague by all who knew him. He was also a regular member of our Police Choir,
He first joined the Bermuda Police as a young Cadet in 1966 prior to attending Training School on Course #10 from March to June in 1968.
His first posting as a young constable was to Central Division (Hamilton) serving there from June 1968 to April 1969 at which time he transferred to Western Dvision in Somerset where he was to spend much of his career. From 1971 to 1973 Michael was parish constable for Southampton Parish where his local knowledge was put to excellent use. He had spells in Central (Uniform) Western (Uniform) and in Operations (Traffic), and in August 1982 Michael was promoted to Sergeant and was posted to Central Division (Hamilton) before moving back to Western Division. In 1987 he served for a spell as Supreme Court Officer, and he retired in October 2002 after devoting a total of 37 years to the Bermuda Police Service.
Michael married his beloved Canadian born wife, Ann Marie (nee Mercer) in 1980, and they had two children, Richard and Jennifer.
Michael was awarded the Colonial Police Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in 1984.
Although not in the best of health in recent years, Michael made the effort to come out to several of our Expo functuions accompanied by his daughter Jennifer. He will be sorely missed.
We offer our sincere condolences to Ann Marie, Richard and Jennifer, and to the rest of their family on behalf of all of our colleagues.
