Sergeant Donald Grant
We are deeply saddened to report on the death of our good friend and colleague, retired Sergeant Donald Grant, who passed away on Monday 12thJune 2023, in hospital in Kent, England.
Donald had joined the Bermuda Police in October 1973 and after a Localisation Course he was posted to Central Division (Hamilton) along with his good friend Ian Graham. Donald and Ian grew up together in Scotland, went to school together, joined the Renfrew and Bute Constabulary together, applied for and joined the Bermuda Police together on the same day, and after their localization course were both posted to Central Division (Hamilton) - together.
After 2 years in Central Division, Donald transferred to Eastern Division in 1975, and went on to serve in Eastern CID, Central CID, and in Operations (Traffic). Donald was an excellent driver and attended an Advanced Driving Course in Kent in 1987, and had also attended a Traffic Accident Investigation Course.
In April 1980, Donald married his wife, Christine, who was a nurse here at King Ewdard Hospital and whilst in Bermuda they had two children, Laura, born in 1981, and Lindsay born in 1984.
Donald was a very popular and well-liked police officer. He was promoted to Sergeant, and he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct medal in 1987. Donald retired from the BPS in December 2005 and several years later, after Christine retired as a nurse, they eventually moved to Kent in England.
It should be noted that Donald would have celebrated his 50th Anniversary of joining the Bermuda Police on October 3rd this year (2023).
Sadly, Christine passed away in January 2022. We understand that Donald travelled to New Zealand towards the end of last year for several months to visit his daughter Lindsay, before returning to his home in Kent.
We send our sincere condolences to Laura and Lindsay, and to all their family members, and to Donald's many friends. We understand that the family will probably hold a private memorial service at some future date.
