A request for information about the Bermuda Dockyard Police on the Old Bermuda: Our Island, Our History Facebook page prompted action on this subject which I had been considering for a while.
My article documents the background to the creation of the Lists of former members of the Bermuda Police Force. Well into the process, I started to come across men who were listed as Dockyard Police.
My research into the Dockyard Police has grown but I have yet to find out when the Bermuda Dockyard Police Force was officially formed. I believe it was created out of a unit of Royal Marines which may initially have been the security detail for the Bermuda Dockyard but I have no formal proof of that. It may be coincidence that the Dockyard Police Force wore the uniform of the Royal Marines, but with their own DPF insignia.
The Dockyard Police Force was probably in existence before the mid 1880s as the Royal Gazette of 6th January 1885 carries a story of an author falling foul of a Dockyard Policemen when on a tour of the Dockyard when the author tried to make some written notes.
The Royal Naval Dockyard formally closed on Saturday 31 March 1951. The Dockyard Police remained in service until the Bermuda Government took over the site and policing the area became the responsibility of Bermuda Police Force.
Some of the Dockyard Policeman also served in the Bermuda Police Force and these men are highlighted in bold. Perhaps the most famous was Commissioner of Police, Leroy Maxwell ‘Nobby’ Clarke QPM, CPM.
Whilst I continue my research, below is the List of Names and the service of the Dockyard Policemen I am aware of so far. I believe there was a Dockyard civilian jail, (completely separate from the Military Prison), which came under the command of the Dockyard Police Force Inspector, in similar fashion to the early Bermuda Police Force history. Several men seem to move between the ranks of Warden and Constable and I have included both here.
Many of the names are taken from the Baptismal Records of the Dockyard Church, (Inspector Galloway had 12 children baptized there), and others from a photo dated ‘1947’. This is why there are so many In Service (is) dates.
