Stepping Back in Time

We have just come into possession of this photograph which was taken well before most of us joined the Bermuda Police, but anyone who served during the 1960's might be able to recognize a few familiar faces.  We look forward to hearing from anyone who can assist us in figuring out just who is in it and when and where it was taken.  You can either write to us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Your quote is a bit off my friend.
"Defeating the purpose".
As I stated before it is to give others a chance.
Don't want to hog the site and take away from others to use their memory which is fading like your and mine.
That's all.

Happy Cup Match.
Shalom.

Editor's Note - Terry, you write that you don't want to "hog the site" but this is your 5th comment on this entry alone! You also claim to be able to recognize 4 people in it but so far the only name you have given is "John Joe" who, if you are referring to John Joe Sheehy is not in the photo. You also make the statement "Ole Goat seems to know everything" but I have no idea who you are referring to.

The only person who has written in about this photo is Mrs Diane Saunders who is no doubt one of the few people still with us who knew most of the men in it, including her late husband, and she has done her best to help us identify them, which is the whole purpose of this column.

As already stated, you also claimed to know everyone in the photograph of Police Retirees dated 1989, and despite the fact that quite a few people have written in to identify most of those present, we still have 10 persons who remain unknown. Why don't you just check the photo again and see if you can actually recognize some, or all of those who remain unidentified and let us have their names before they slip from our collective memories.

I think the man in the back between Taffy and Joe Nixon is Tommy Johnson???

If I gave names to all Mr. Sherratt in my view it would be defeating the purpose.
I happened to grow up with many during this period and/or others.

"We can only encourage you to share your knowledge". Well that makes sense that is why I don't just jump in and name them or close. Give others a chance.
I also see John Joe.

A great day to all.

Editor's Note - To be honest Terry, it defeats the purpose of showing these photos when you say you know who is in them but don't provide us with the information. A prime example is the photo of Police Retirees dated 1989 - the largest photo we have ever published. You wrote to us and confidently stated, "Not to burst your bubble Roger, but I can name them all". We left the photo on our front page for weeks in hopes of identifying everyone, and we received input from a number of our readers, but we still have about 10 people who remain unidentified.

If, as you say, you can identify them all, how on earth does that "defeat the purpose"? All we ask is that you share your knowledge.

From the back left "Taffy" John Lewis - unknown - Joe Nixon - Jack "Tug" Wilson - unknown - "Nobby" Clark - Bernie Callinan - unknown - Bill McGrath. Second Row: John Starbuck - Hamilton 'Sandy' Saunders. Third row - unknown - Barry Elliott - Col.Roy Newing - John Elliott - unknown. Front row left John Marshall.

Editors Note - Many thanks Diane for sharing this information, and the photo which we received from you through Mike Cherry. It really is a fabulous photo from the past and much appreciated. We will leave it on the front page for a few more days to see if anyone can help identify those who are as yet unknown.

Well I can but that ruin it; would it not?
As I have said before let others comment.

Ole Goat seems to know everything......bwahaaaaa.
Jest Roger..

Editors note - Terry, The whole idea of our Who, Where and When column is to encourage former colleagues to share their knowledge and their experiences. This photo was taken long before most of our readers joined the Bermuda Police and only a select few will know who is featured here. We can only encourage you to share your knowledge.

My cousin front and left.

Editors note - I know who it is Terry. He was quite a character and one of the forerunners of Traffic Department.
Can you let people know his name and perhaps some additional information about him.
