Listed below are the names of many of our former colleagues who have passed away.  This list is by no means complete and it would be much appreciated if you would let us have the names of anyone who is missing from it. Unfortunately, there is no official record kept by the Bermuda Police Service so we are attempting to create our own.

If you see any mistakes or can assist in providing extra names please contact us by email at our address listed on the front page.

We would also appreciate any additional information you can provide such as full names where we have initials, and the last rank of the person.

I am reminded of the many wonderful people I met and served with during my decade on The Rock.I am blessed indeed.
In quiet memory of those times, Wally

Editors note - Many thanks for your comment Mick. When you look through this list it sure reminds you how many very talented characters we have served with in the Bermuda Police.

Roger, I know this may not be possible for whatever reason, but would there be any chance of adding a month & year of death to everyone's records? This is to avoid any mix-up such as the one I made about Dickie Isted, of which there were two (about which I didn't know) and I queried the death of the wrong one!

Editors note - This is an excellent idea Davie. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to do so for the majority but will create a column for month and one for year, and see how it goes.

In this context I think Supy. means Supernumerary i.e. exceeding a regular or proper number; an extra. Also means to function as a substitute or assistant with regard to a regular body or staff.
Supernumerary is an old term that once referred to part-time police officers. However, a supernumerary is a fully sworn officer who has the same powers as other officers but does not hold the substantive rank. Police departments define the job differently and some departments (and legislation) limit a supernumerary's powers.
There are direct reasons, which will become apparent in our later article, to believe that Supy. in this case means Supernumerary.

Editors note - Thanks for the cliarification George. Look forward to seeing the article.

NAME CORRECTION to Entry#20
The full name of Arthur Childs should read:
Arthur Richard Childs - NOT Arthur Reginald Childs.

New and as yet unconfirmed information reveals that
he might have made it to the rank of Sergeant before resigning in about 1951. Personnel records for this period are not available.

Editors note - George, a page I scanned from the Blue Books for 1946 confirm his name as Arthur Richard Childs and his rank is given as First Class Constable (Supy. Sergeant) with an annual pay of £460 per annum plus "uniform allowance in lieu of quarters of £60 per annum."

I had scanned one other page showing him with the same rank and then earning £550 per annum plus allowance. This entry also records that Supy. Sergeant Childs resigned on 3rd December 1950. I can only presume that this latter entry was in the 1950 Blue Book because it would otherwise not include his resignation date. There are other personnel listed as "Sergeant" with a slightly higher pay scale, so "Supy. Sergeant probably means Acting Sergeant or Supervisory Sergeant. Andy Bermingham might be able to assist regarding this designation.

P.C. Arthur Richard Childs died in hospital on 20 August 1969 after a short illness at the age of 55. He is buried in St. John's Church Cemetery, Pembroke.
Arthur was not in service at the time of his death having earlier resigned the BPS in about 1951. He went into full-time business on the Island as a locksmith and offering general machine repairs. Arthur joined the BPS in late 1935.

Editors note - Many thanks for that addition George. I must add that George is currently doing some research for an article about Arthur Childs, and would you believe it, he has recently interviewed Arthur's wife who is still living here in Bermuda at the grand age of 104. I wonder how many of our colleagues can remember Arthur Childs "claim to fame" while he was serving in the Bermuda Police Force.

Former PC/DC Graham Mitchell, well known to many members of this site, sadly passed away in 2015.

I also served 1982-83 in Hamilton and St George's.

Regards,
Stephen Smith
(former PC233).

Editors note - Many thanks Steve for taking the time to write to us and for letting us know about the death of Graham Mitchell. Please feel free to write and let us know where you are and what you're doing these days, and where you went after leaving Bermuda in 1983.

It's a sobering thought that, during my 34 years in the job, I served with nearly half of the 300+ on that list and knew many others as civvies.....

Read the comment about Tim Willis' name being listed twice, and your response. Check again.. it is the first 'W' listing and appears again further down.
BTW, any idea what happened to Ray (Raymond C) Hackett? I served with him in the early '60s in Hamilton. Sadly most of my contemporaries are on this list!

Great to hear from you Mike. Have corrected the list re Tim Willis. I see that you served here from January 1961 to January 1964, and that Ray Hackett served from May 1961 - May 1964. Unfortunately, I have no information about Ray at this point but will check around. Could you please send us some more information about yourself so I can post it either in Keeping in Touch, or our Then and Now column? Please also send us photos of you in uniform while in Bermuda, and a more recent photo, perhaps with family.
